Suppers For Sobriety
Where people lead a healthier life in body, mind, and spirit

Founders

The founders of Suppers for Sobriety are Dor and Cindy, two women in central New Jersey who want to help alcoholics and their loved ones lead healthier lives. Dor, a holistic health care practitioner, first conceived of the program while working on a masters degree in counseling. Cindy, a devoted member of AA, was the first to try the program. Together we ran the first pilot program, and we continue to develop the literature with willing alcoholics who are earnest about their recovery. Read more about the founders in their own stories available in the STORIES section.

Here Is What We Understand

Given a disease that is widely acknowledged to embrace the body, mind, and spirit of the sufferer, the body has long taken a back seat to the mind and spirit in treatment and recovery groups. The body, or biological aspect of addiction, has largely been characterized by medical intervention for detox and pharmaceuticals for depression, anxiety and symptom management. But addiction in its biological roots is also a diet-related problem that manifests in different ways in different bodies. Wherever we see people cranky and craving, depressed or anxious, scattered and sleep deprived, we know that care for their bodies has been left out of the recovery equation. Our rationale for creating a group based on “suppers” centers on nourishing cells that have been starved by alcoholism or other addictions and poor nutrition.

Keeping the focus on suppers also helps us recreate one of the most powerful settings for teaching and healing: the family table. In setting the tone for Suppers for Sobriety we wanted to give people a chance to experiment in a friendly environment, to care and be cared about, to share the journey. Making these changes, especially for people who didn’t grow up sitting down to regular meals, takes a lot of support.

We are committed to dealing with the financial reality that blocks some people’s pathway to health. Recovery is expensive. We have made a commitment to provide the Suppers literature for free by posting it on the Suppers website as PDF files. Once the pilot projects finalize the material, a book will be available for purchase, but the website will still post all material. Though promotional materials will be available to help us support our work, you will never be asked to pay for anything but the cost of your own food and rent to participate in Suppers for Sobriety meetings. Most of the recipes we’re developing are low cost and nutrient dense. They run just a few dollars per meal to prepare.

Who We Are Is About You

Suppers for Sobriety is for anyone who feels addicted, especially to alcohol, their health relatives, and loved ones. We include people who have stopped drinking on their own, people who have used or are using 12 step programs, and people whose lives have been touched by alcohol, particularly those with a family history of alcoholism, attention deficits, obesity, diabetes and/or mental health issues.

Welcome to our tables of Suppers for Sobriety, where people heal one meal at a time.
